AI in education currently feels confusing for many teachers, even teachers who are open to using it.

Rules shift.
Tools change.
Policies evolve.

Platforms appear and disappear rapidly.

At the same time, teachers are being asked to protect student privacy, understand new technologies,
evaluate instructional value, avoid harmful shortcuts,
and make practical classroom decisions quickly.

That is too many pressure points.

This presentation is not about pretending AI is simple.

​It is about acknowledging the reality teachers are already experiencing; AI is here, but the systems around it are still developing.

The goal is not blind adoption.

​The goal is responsible navigation.

One of the biggest mistakes schools can make is pretending AI is either completely good or completely bad.

The reality is more complicated.
 
The central question has already evolved past SHOULD schools use AI.

Instead the question has now become about how we use AI responsibly without weakening the human parts of learning that matter most.

That question has no perfect answer yet.
But schools still need to engage with it thoughtfully.
   
If I was trying to frame the essential institutional mindset and approach to AI it would look something like this:

AI should support thinking not replace thinking.
AI should assist instruction not replace relationships.
AI should increase access not reduce rigor.
The teacher remains the most important part of the classroom.

One of the biggest sources of confusion around AI in schools right now is not the technology itself.

It is policy.

Many teachers are hearing:
“Use AI.” “Innovate.” “Prepare students for the future.”

At the same time, they are also hearing:
“Do not use unapproved tools.” “Protect student data.” “Wait for review.” “Check compliance first.”

The tension exists and it has to be addressed.


ERMA in Review

ERMA exists to help protect student privacy, data security, educational records, and compliance requirements.

In practice, it means vendors and digital tools must go through review processes before they are considered safe for school use with student information.

Because not all AI tools store data the same way, protect privacy the same way, or follow educational compliance standards.  

ERMA is not trying to stop innovation.
It is trying to reduce risk.
The challenge is that technology moves faster than institutional review systems.

Schools are trying to balance innovation, privacy compliance, safety, and practicality all at the same time.

That is not an easy balance.


​A Friendly 4 Point Plan for Responsible AI Usage

1. Avoid entering sensitive student information into public AI tools.
So no:
full student names
grades
IEP information
disciplinary information
personal identifying details  

2. Focus on teacher-facing use cases

brainstorming
lesson drafting
rubric ideas
differentiation supports
creating examples
generating practice questions
These often carry far less privacy risk.
 
3. Check with me if you are not sure

Unfortunately you do not have easy access to ERMA, but I can tell you about the status of any program.

4. Stay flexible

The list of approved and reviewed tools will continue to evolve. What matters most is not memorizing a single platform. It is understanding the risks the responsibilities and the reasoning behind the policies.

AI is moving into education whether schools feel fully prepared or not.

Students are already using it.
Parents are hearing about it.
Districts are trying to respond to it.
Teachers are being asked to adapt to it.

It has already arrived.
How do we respond responsibly?
 
Right now, there is often a gap between educational realities, technical realities, and policy realities.

Teachers are expected to navigate all three simultaneously.
That is difficult because each world speaks a different language.

True technology support staff must function as a translator. 
 
We do not need hype, panic, or blind adoption. 

We need clarity, structure, realistic guidance and practical workflows.

That means helping educators answer questions.
What tools are appropriate?
What risks should I understand?
What is safe to experiment with?
How do I protect students?
How do I save time without lowering quality?
What still requires human judgment?
 
Technology initiatives fail when they ignore classroom reality.

Teachers should never feel pressured to become programmers.

The goal is practical literacy, not technical perfection.
 
That is why translation matters.

Someone has to help connect pedagogy, technology, and policy in ways that actually make sense inside real classrooms.

Some educators are already experimenting comfortably.

Others are understandably cautious.

Many are somewhere in the middle.

That is normal.
